Skiing
Ski Beech is the highest ski area in eastern North America. Ski Beech is my favorite ski area - more Intermediate skiing and more to do.
Sugar Mountain just outside of Banner Elk comes highly recommended. With 115 skiable Acres and 1,200 ft., vertical drop the MOST in North Carolina.
Hawksnest is located just off of Highway 105 South between Boone and Banner Elk, North Carolina...high atop Seven Devils offering night time skiing and is a favorite of the tubing and snow-boarding college crowd.
Appalachian Ski Mtn is still the mountain of choice for skiers of all ages and abilities with 10 slopes, two terrain parks and a panoramic outdoor ice arena. It is a good place for beginners and most convenient. A lot of groups and church groups like this area. The have good teaching facilities with the French-Swiss Ski College.

 
Hiking
Hiking is an equally popular outdoor activity here in the high country. There are a wide range of places to check out with amazing vistas. Our trail systems offer callenges for an entire range of enthusiasts.

The Blue Ridge Parkway weaves its way for almost 2.5 miles through the forest and meadows of Moses H. Cone Memorial Park
The Blowing Rock - The Blowing Rock, North Carolina's oldest travel attraction since 1933, is an immense cliff 4,000 feet above sea level overhanging Johns River Gorge 3,000 feet below.

People come from all over to select their own Xmas tree.
At Thanksgiving all the cars here have at least one tree on top of the car and most times - multiple trees. People also select wreaths, and garland. The tree farms often offer hot cider or hot chocolate to their customers.
Cycling is big and groups go out on the Blue Ridge Parkway each Wednesday night from Magic Cycles in Boone. Cyclists are constant companions on our roads everyday. Lance Armstrong began his cycling come-back in Boone, after his recovery from cancer.
Mountain Biking in the High Country is a very popular activity and there are many local bike shops in the area. Each year the High Country plays host to several bike races and biking events that are becoming popular among mountain bikers everywhere.

High Mountain Expeditions offers outdoor activities, such as North Carolina whitewater rafting for every member of your group or family.
Fishing
We are at the Headwaters of many rivers located in The High Country. This is the spawning grounds for a wide variety of fish which creates a wonderful fly-fishing waters. Cove Creek, Watauga River, The New River, The Linville River are just a few areas that will find avid fishing aficionados.

Golf
North Carolina is about as perfect as it gets for golfers. Golf is perhaps one of the most popular mountain activities in the warmer months.
In Banner Elk, there are some of the best golf courses in the state. The Elk River Club’s course was designed by Jack Nicklaus, however it is a private club and membership is by invitation only.
Nestled in the beautiful Watauga Valley, just south of Boone, The Boone Golf Club features level to gently rolling fairways, large undulating greens, lush greenery, crisp mountain air, and breath-taking views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.
