Blowing Rock (elevation 4000 feet) was selected as one of America’s best “Mountain Towns”. Crampton used the term, “picture-perfect”. Blowing Rock sits at the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains with 50-mile views overlooking Johns River Gorge. Wealthy residents of the Piedmont first settled Blowing Rock in the early 20th Century. Wanting to escape the heat, they enjoyed the cool climate, slower lifestyle, and beautiful vistas during the summer months. The “village” of Blowing Rock is filled with art galleries, summer theatre, fine restaurants, and boutiques. Outdoor art shows in the center of town happen during the summer and fall. Every August, the Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show, one of the oldest in the nation, attracts many equestrian visitors. “Winterfest” is a winter festival occurring the last weekend of January, highlighted by a variety of fun and entertaining events.
Meandering between Boone and Blowing Rock in Watauga County is the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway. Watauga County is also home to golf courses, tennis clubs, and ski resorts. The mountains provide the ideal terrain for hiking, rock climbing, river rafting, biking, AND for those less energetic – a picnic amongst the beautiful flora and fauna along the Parkway! Here are some links to the beautiful High Country and surrounding countryside that will introduce you to the exquisite landscapes, special events, and unique historic towns in this area.
