Banner Elk, NC lies at the base of Grandfather Mountain, Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain. This is a one intersection - a one stoplight “village” that is home to Lees McRae College, a 4-year private college and dominate landmark in the village - a picturesque center with many local inns, shops, art galleries and restaurants. Winter brings skiers and snowboarders from November through March to enjoy two of the largest ski areas in the south.
Should you not happen to be a skier you may enjoy sledding or snow tubing or alternately just relax by a fire and enjoy the blue Mountain ambience.
Spring is a delight! Take a wildflower hike and enjoy their abundant and colorful beauty! Climb Grandfather Mountain’s Profile Trail, walk on Grandfather’s Mile-High Swinging Bridge, or visit the bear habitat to see and feed the new born cubs!
Summer is terrific with so much to do! Golfers, tennis aficionados, hikers and bikers, craft festivals, shoppers – it is all here!
If you like to eat – there is a wide variety of restaurants to make sampling the cuisines a favorite pastime.
Lees McRae College offers popular summer theater.
Blueberries, blackberries and raspberries can be found along the roadsides and trails – fun to pick a few or take a bundle. Fly fish in one of the many streams. Canoe or kayak a river! Raft the whitewater! Picnic along the Blue Ridge Parkway or on top of Sugar or Beech Mountain. Attend the festive Scottish Games and gathering of the Clans which occurs on Grandfather Mountain the 2nd weekend of July! You will hear the music of bagpipes as they practice for competitions while you drive through the hillsides.
Fall – the favorite time to be in the mountains! The beauty of the changing leaves brings LOTS of weekenders. Football games, fall festivals, craft festivals, apple festivals, hiking and photographing the foliage - all are fun! Banner Elk’s Woolly Worm Festival, attracting close to 20,000 people, is held the 3rd weekend in October along with the Valle Crucis Country Fair. Both feature food and crafts for people of all ages!
